Danish names of birds
This is an attempt to register all birds with danish names. I have of course found many websites with names of birds on the Internet, but as yet have none of them been complete. Either foreign birds have not been included or synonyms have been absent.
The most distinguished register on names on birds is "Avibase". This site is managed by Denis Le Page and hosted by Bird Studies Canada - the canadian co-partner for Birdlife International. The register has names of about 32.000 species - in many languages, and is the most comprehensive I have encountered. Unfortunately it still does not have all the danish synonyms.
Another option is to use "Danske navne på alverdens fugle" / by Navnegruppen for DOF, LDF, ZOO & ZM. This book register more than 11.000 names of birds and is also available on the net. It ought to be printed out as the Internet edition can be rather tiresome.
On the list below, every single specie is filed with a danish name under the latin term (the scientific name of the bird). Then follows the danish name - and at the end in square brackets [], a reference to the source - the book in which I discovered the name for the first time.
If one wants to find the latin name (scientific name) for a danish bird name - or visa versa, one has to make a wordsearch in one's browser (In "Explorer": click "Edit" then choose "Search on this page". - In "Firefox": click "Edit" then choose "Find on this page". - In "Safari": type the word in the field with the magnifying-glass.
One must however be aware that the same bird can have several different names in latin, just as a bird can have several different names in danish. Some of the differences can however be due to misprints in the source mentioned. In choosing between the many names I suggest that one rely on "Avibase". If one wants to know the occurence of the same name the browser "Safari" can be useful.
OBS! As the file is very extensive - because of the many names - it can take some time to download.
